Backgammon Bag finished!

HEY! YOU MADE IT! I’M SO GLAD YOU’RE HERE!

For some people, even experienced sewists (aka sewing artists!) the thought of making a bag seems a little daunting – it creates the same feeling when people think about making lingerie too btw, but that’s another story.

“THIS LOOKS COMPLICATED!  IT’S SMALL AND FIDDLY! “WHAT IF I DO IT WRONG AND WASTE ALL MY MATERIALS?”

You know what, everyone has these same feelings and everyone has to start somewhere. Start with a beginner’s bag, something very basic, good tools and a good pattern.

“DON’T WORRY – I GOT YOUR BACK!”

So the best way to get started is just to START.  Cut out two squares of fabric, sew them together on three sides, turn it inside out and you got the beginnings of your first bag – see, no pattern required!  I told you it wasn’t hard!   Before you know it, you will be itching to try something with just a little more detail, just a few more steps, and just a few more pattern pieces.  Like anything else, bag-making is a learning process, and you need to cut yourself some slack, take it slowly, learn from your mistakes and be patient with yourself.  Eventually you will find yourself dreaming about handbags, and patterns, and fabrics, and shiny, shiny hardware, and before you know it, you too will be addicted to making bags!  (Don’t worry, I know a support group we can join).

{EVERYONE MAKES MISTAKES}

Everyone does make mistakes so don’t listen to anyone who says otherwise, K?  Start off with the two squares of practice fabric and watch something 2D turn into something 3D, I won’t even need to hold your hand for this one because it’s easy peasy!  If you still feel a little nervous, then read this post about some of my bag-making disasters.  Just remember that it is a learning process – think of it as an experiment if it makes you feel better – you will most likely make mistakes, but that’s OK.  Learning from your mistakes means that you will remember what not to do next time.

YOU WILL SURPRISE YOURSELF WITH YOUR AWESOMENESS!
